Safest Areas in the North West of England 2026

The North West of England covers four police force areas: Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cheshire, and Merseyside. It spans one of the country's most varied landscapes, from the dense urban core of inner Manchester to the affluent commuter belt of Cheshire and the coastal towns of Lancashire. Crime profiles vary enormously. Here is a guide to the North West's lowest-crime postcode districts using official Police data.

How the North West Compares Nationally

Greater Manchester and Merseyside both record above-average crime rates compared to the national benchmark. This is a function of their urban density, deprivation levels in certain areas, and the complexity of managing large metropolitan populations. Cheshire and Lancashire, by contrast, have crime profiles much closer to (or below) the national average, with significant tracts of genuinely low-crime rural and suburban England.

The Safest Areas: Cheshire

Cheshire consistently produces some of the North West's lowest crime figures. The county's combination of low deprivation, high owner-occupancy, affluent market towns, and relatively sparse population density makes it one of the safer places to live in the region.

Standout low-crime areas within Cheshire include:

  • Knutsford (WA16). A prosperous market town with very low recorded crime. Theft and vehicle crime are the dominant categories, but at modest levels. Knutsford is regularly cited as one of Cheshire's most desirable postcodes.
  • Tarporley and rural mid-Cheshire (CW6). A rural postcode covering the villages around Tarporley. Crime counts are among the lowest in the entire North West.
  • Wilmslow (SK9). Another affluent Cheshire commuter town with a low crime profile. Vehicle crime is slightly elevated due to high-value cars in the area (relay theft is a concern for keyless vehicles), but overall counts are well below the regional average.
  • Northwich (CW9) and Winsford (CW7). Mid-Cheshire market towns with moderate crime profiles that sit well below Greater Manchester equivalents.

The Cheshire East and Cheshire West local authority areas as a whole are among the safest in England. This has contributed to their strong property markets and the steady migration of Manchester commuters southward.

The Safest Areas: Lancashire

Lancashire spans a wide range of environments, from the historic city of Lancaster in the north to the coastal resorts of Blackpool and Morecambe in the west and the Ribble Valley countryside in the east. Crime profiles vary accordingly.

The Ribble Valley, particularly the postcodes covering Clitheroe and the surrounding villages (BB7), consistently records among the lowest crime figures in the North West. This is a predominantly rural district with a stable, predominantly owner-occupied population and very low footfall from outside the area.

Lancaster itself (LA1) has a moderate crime profile. It is elevated in the city centre and around the university, lower in the residential suburbs to the south and east. Morecambe (LA4, LA5) has faced challenges with higher ASB and some property crime in certain areas.

The Safest Areas: Greater Manchester Suburbs

Within Greater Manchester, the safest options are largely in the southern and western fringes. Altrincham (WA14), Sale (M33), and Hale are among the consistently lowest-crime residential postcodes in the metropolitan county. The Trafford borough, which includes these areas, has notably lower crime rates than the Manchester, Salford, and Oldham boroughs.

Further south, areas bordering Cheshire (such as parts of Stockport: SK7, SK8, SK10, and Macclesfield) offer genuinely low crime profiles while remaining accessible to Manchester by tram or train.

The Safest Areas: Merseyside

Merseyside is the most challenging of the four North West police force areas from a crime perspective. The Liverpool metropolitan area records elevated crime across most categories. Within the region there are lower-crime options though, particularly in the Wirral (CH postcodes on the western side of the Mersey), Formby (L37), and Southport (PR8, PR9).

Formby in particular stands out. It is a coastal village north of Liverpool with very low crime counts and strong community cohesion. It is consistently popular with families relocating from Liverpool precisely because of its safer profile.

How to Choose Between North West Postcodes

The key insight for anyone moving to the North West is that the differences between neighbouring postcodes can be enormous, far greater than any city-level or county-level average would suggest. Checking the specific postcode district (and ideally the ward-level breakdown within it) before committing to a move is the most useful thing you can do with crime data.
